Lifetime Adopt a Tree

Ahu Lani Sanctuary is a forestry center and normally would harvest koa trees after 25 to 50 years of growth. The harvest of some of our trees allows us to perpetuate the forest and our protection of it far into the future.

However, we do NOT need to harvest all of our koa trees to meet the goal of perpetuation. Some koa trees can be left to grow to the limit of their natural lives, which could be 100 years or more. Eventually, of course, all trees die. The maximum lifespan of koa trees is not known, but we do know that most of the koa disappeared from cattle ranching areas after 150 years or so. If a koa tree dies a natural death and does not fall down, then we need to harvest it to protect the health of the rest of the forest: a falling tree can damage many other healthy trees and lead to the start of disease processes in those healthy trees.

Thus, we offer the option of a "Lifetime adoption" of a koa tree for $2000. Your tree will never be cut down.

What do I receive?

-A Certificate of Adoption for your lifetime adoption framed in koa wood and containing a picture of your newly planted tree and its GPS coordinates.

-An 8 X 10 acrylic sign identifying your lifetime adopted tree with your message on it

-Photographs of your adopted tree emailed to you (or your recipient) for the next 20 years

-A visit to your grove next time you (or your recipient) are on the Big Island of Hawaii

The koa pictured here is still young in tree years. Imagine what it will look like ten years from now!
